Is your sofa electrically charged? Here's what you can do about it.
Does your sofa occasionally give you an electric shock? Then you've come to the right place. We'll show you what's wrong and how to avoid future electric shocks.
Electrically charged furniture: what's behind it?
You probably know it: you sit on the couch and get cleaned. These mini-electric shocks can be quite unpleasant. If it all happens in the dark, there might even be a visible spark. But why can furniture and other objects become statically charged?
There are several reasons behind this.
- Dry air: A very common cause of static electricity is dry air. Normally, the positive and negative charges can be balanced by the humidity in the air. But as soon as the air becomes too dry, as often happens in winter, this balance can no longer occur, and sparks can fly.

- Friction: In everyday life, friction often creates static charges. Friction occurs not only when vacuuming the sofa, which can cause small electric shocks, but also when simply walking around the living room.
- Material: Whether something can become statically charged obviously also depends on the material. Non-conductors include, for example, plastic or rubber. Synthetic chemical fibers, on the other hand, are more vulnerable and therefore more easily charged.
Our tips against static electricity
Of course, we know many useful tips on how to avoid unpleasant sparks, so pay attention:
Use dryer sheets
Cleaning your sofa with a dryer sheet is probably the easiest way to combat static electricity. Dryer sheets are actually designed for the dryer and give your laundry a fresh scent. But since they also work great against static, they're perfect for a little "couch rubbing."
Increase humidity
Have you ever noticed that your sofa gives you electric shocks, especially in the winter? Static electricity can build up much more easily in dry, heated air.

To increase the humidity in your home, you can use, for example, a humidifier. But it's even simpler: a few plants in the room can significantly increase the moisture content in the air.
Immediately after vacuuming, sofas are usually particularly charged. Lightly dampening your sofa with a spray bottle can effectively counteract discharges and thus electric shocks.
Antistatic sprays
Some upholstered furniture already has antistatic components incorporated into the fabric, but obviously not all do. Antistatic sprays are a simple solution for anyone who wants to reliably de-static their sofa.
Simply spray the sofa from about 30 cm away and let it dry. The sofa can then be used immediately, and static electricity is a thing of the past.
Make your own anti-static spray
You can also easily make your own anti-static spray. To do this, you'll need the following:
- 1 spray bottle
- 1 teaspoon fabric softener
- 1 cup of water

Simply mix fabric softener and water and you're done. Shake the solution well before use. Even with homemade spray, keep a sufficient distance from the sofa to avoid stains.
Discharge the surfaces charged with metal
Another tip you can easily implement at home to free up your couch: take a metal coat hanger or other metal object and slide it over the surfaces of the couch. You'll notice that just a little metal is enough to restore the balance of the charges.
With these simple tricks you can easily prevent electric shocks.
Want more tips?
- Walking barefoot prevents sparks. Electrostatic discharges are encouraged by rubber soles and socks. However, if you're barefoot, sparks can't fly.
- Apply cream regularly. Dry skin is more prone to electric shock. You should moisturize your skin well, especially during the winter months.
- Add 50 ml of baking soda to your detergent to prevent static electricity.
- Fabric softener, dryer balls, a ball of aluminum foil, or a damp towel in the dryer are also considered secret weapons against static.
- Pay attention to the materials your clothes are made of. Cotton or other natural materials are less expensive than nylon or other synthetic fibers.
One thing is certain: with these simple tips and suggestions, annoying electric shocks will no longer stand a chance. 😉
So you can enjoy your sofa again carefree, without sparks.
